Sue Hitzmann: Uncovering the Origin of Our Pain – EP. 193

“The MELT Method is this self-treatment technique that really focuses on keeping the supportive qualities of fascia active and pliable so that the elastic properties remain efficient as we age.” – Sue Hitzmann

On this week’s episode of the Open Sky Fitness Podcast, we have the Creator the MELT Method, Sue Hitzmann, joining us today to share how we can elevate pain. Sue is also a nationally recognized educator, manual therapist, exercise physiologist, and founding member of the Fascia Research Society and author of the New York Times bestselling book, The MELT Method.

In this week’s episode, you will learn all about:

  • How she created the MELT Method and how it can help elevate chronic pain.
  • What connective tissue is and why it’s so important to pay attention to it.
  • The differences between acute pain, chronic pain, and sudden chronic pain.
  • Why diet and exercise cannot help improve the state of the connective tissue but can actually worsen it if we don’t initially approach the root of a person’s pain.
  • The most common areas where your body is still holding onto stress and tension.
  • The 4 Rs of MELT to uncover what’s causing you pain.

The 3 Different Levels of Pain

“It doesn’t matter what causes pain: accidents, illnesses, injuries, heartbreak, or the flu – it doesn’t matter. Your brain doesn’t have a specific pain center in the brain, but there are regions. The very regions of the brain that produce the sensation of pain also produce emotions, store past memories, and create future intentions and ideas. So, chronic pain will sometime hijack those areas of our brain to express itself.” – Sue Hitzmann

When it comes to pain, there are three different types:

  • Acute Pain
  • Chronic Pain
  • Sudden Chronic Pain

Examples of Acute Pain include when you bump your shin into a coffee table or break a bone. To help give you immediate relief, you might use a solution like a pain medication or a cast to help the nervous system quiet down and go into a repair mode.

Chronic Pain is related to disease or disorder and a side effect of a chronic issue. When we experience Sudden Chronic Pain, it’s because we have all this built up stress from repeating harmful daily repetitions such as thought patterns or activities that eventually accumulate and express themselves as a form of pain.

The Most Common Stress Areas

The most common areas where your body is still holding onto stress and tension are the:

  • Shoulder Girdle
  • Diaphragm
  • Pelvis

Holding continuous stress in these areas can eventually lead to neck tension, shoulder problems, hip pain, or knee problems.

The 4 Rs of MELT to Uncover the Root of Your Pain

With the MELT Method, Sue uses the 4 Rs to help her patients uncover the root of their pain to help them heal:

  • Reconnect
  • Rebalance
  • Rehydrate
  • Release

About The MELT Method

The MELT Method

The MELT Method® (MELT®) is a simple self-treatment designed to help you stay healthy, youthful, and active for a lifetime. Just 10 minutes of MELT three times a week is all you need to become a Hands-Off Bodyworker® and reduce the effects of accumulated tension and stress caused by daily living. This full-body method of self-care can be customized to your particular needs – from improving performance and decreasing the risk of repetitive stress injuries to eliminating chronic pain, regardless of what’s causing your pain in the first place.

MELT hands-off development initially began in the 90’s with the tinkering of PVC pipes wrapped in variously changing padded layers in an effort to create results akin to light-touch hands-on therapy, such as osteopathy. By the time MELT was introduced in group environments in 2004, it was called M.E.L.T., an acronym for Myofascial Energetic Length Technique.

All MELT techniques and protocols were built upon key aspects of these major hands-on therapies and influencers: Neuromuscular Therapy (Chaitow), CranioSacral (Upledger), Manual Muscle Testing (Kendall and McCreary), Lymphatic Drainage (Chikly), Visceral Manipulation (Barral), Anatomy Trains (Meyers), Structural Integration (Rolf), the World Fascia Congress (Vleeming, Pollack, Hedley, Stecco et al.), and others.
